The cliff house, so named after the site on which it stands, is situated on a 286 sq. m. lot in a private subdivision. The site was literally carved out of the mountain, the remaining natural grade line of the lot itself is roughly 6 meters below the road from where it is to be accessed.
Rather than spending to fill the site, the client decided to instead utilize the carved out space by creating a four storey residence. Since the site was relatively small, we had to use the maximum allowable area per floor to fit all of the client’s requirements. This resulted in a building massing that would have looked like a rectangular block.
To counter this, we proposed creating a series of terraces that would break the monotonous facade while serving as niche canopies that would prevent excessive heat from entering the house. These terraces would in turn allow a good amount of reflected sunlight to illuminate the interiors, thereby reducing -if not eliminating- the need for artificial lighting, while also offering panoramic views to the city and countryside.
